THE NEXT MANDELA PROJECT

Empowering a New Generation of Transformative Youth Leaders in Cameroon

The Next Mandela Project: Empowering a New Generation of Transformative Youth Leaders in Cameroon

Young people are central to the future of democratic governance, yet many lack the practical skills, platforms, and mentorship needed to meaningfully engage in political and civic processes. In Cameroon, challenges such as limited political literacy, weak civic engagement, and gaps in leadership capacity continue to affect the quality of youth participation in governance.

To respond to this need, NewSETA implemented the Next Mandela Project, a leadership and political empowerment initiative designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding required to engage constructively in democratic processes and community leadership.

The project focuses on developing a new generation of transformative leaders who are not only politically aware, but also committed to integrity, accountability, civic responsibility, and positive social change.

Strengthening Youth Capacity for Democratic Participation

At the core of the Next Mandela Project is the belief that effective democratic participation begins with knowledge and preparation. The project provides young leaders with practical training in governance, leadership, civic engagement, and political communication, helping them better understand both the opportunities and responsibilities of public leadership.

Participants are exposed to key themes including leadership theory and practice, constituency engagement, electoral systems, manifestos and campaign strategy. Special emphasis is placed on understanding electoral constituencies and grassroots engagement. Participants also engage in discussions on ethics, accountability, and corruption, exploring the role of values in shaping effective and responsible leadership

A central component of the project focuses on strengthening participants’ communication and advocacy skills. Sessions on public speaking, personal branding, and digital communication equip participants to confidently articulate ideas, engage the public, and build credible leadership identities.

Through these sessions, participants develop a deeper understanding of how political systems operate and how young leaders can position themselves as credible representatives of their communities.

Experiential Learning: The Mandela Pitch

One of the most impactful components of the project is the Mandela Pitch, a practical exercise where participants deliver short, structured political and leadership speeches.

This exercise provides participants with a real-time platform to apply the communication, advocacy, and leadership skills they have acquired. It strengthens their ability to articulate vision, engage audiences, and communicate solutions to community challenges.

Beyond individual performance, the Mandela Pitch fosters peer learning, reflection, and confidence-building, helping them refine their leadership identity and public communication styles.

Impact and Looking Ahead

The Next Mandela Project has contributed significantly to strengthening youth leadership capacity, political awareness, and civic engagement among participants. It has equipped young people with practical tools to participate more effectively in democratic processes, while also reinforcing values of integrity, accountability, and service.

Beyond individual skills development, the project is helping to cultivate a generation of leaders who are better prepared to engage constructively in political and civic life, particularly in the context of upcoming electoral cycles and evolving governance challenges.

The Next Mandela Project ultimately envisions a Cameroon where young leaders are not only participants in democracy, but active shapers of it, driving integrity, inclusion, and transformation at every level of society.
